Solon wants to indicate PH territory in WPS with more navigational buoys.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) should install more navigational buoys to identify the nation’s territorial seas, which China also claims.

The signs “should serve as a warning to the Chinese and other foreign powers that those are a demarcation of our 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under international law,” according to a news release issued on Monday by Rufus Rodriguez, a representative for the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City.

Rodriguez applauded the PCG for erecting five navigational buoys over the weekend to assert the nation’s sovereignty over contested islets, reefs, and shoals in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). Still, he claimed that more was required along the country’s entire length, from the north in the Ilocos region to the south in the Palawan area.

“China ought to vacate that region. According to Rodriguez, certain islets and seascapes there have no business has been occupied.

He encouraged PCG to include navigational markers in its budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year and suggested enlisting the Philippine Navy’s assistance in deploying the buoys.

The navigational buoys flying the national flag were positioned by Task Force Kaligtasan sa Karagatan in the vicinity of Patag Island, Balagtas Reef, Kota Island, Panata Island, and Juan Felipe Reef between May 10 and 12, according to Commodore Jay Tarriela, a spokesman for PCG-WPS.

The Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal, roughly 120 miles from Zambales and Pangasinan and a traditional fishing site for Filipino fishermen from the two provinces, is where the Coast Guard suggested buoys, according to Rodriguez.

“China is occupying that even though it is a part of our EEZ. Our fishermen frequently face harassment from the Chinese Coast Guard, he claimed.

In 2012, China captured Scarborough Shoal after a confrontation between the Chinese Coast Guard and the PCG.
