PTRI plans to build innovation hubs for bamboo textile fibers.

In addition to the current three hubs, the institute’s director announced on Friday that the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) will build at least three more Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hubs (BTFIH) by 2024.

Abra’s Lagangilang, according to PTRI officer in charge Julius Leao, will get one this year.

PTRI will open BTFIHs in Maramag, Bukidnon, and Pangasinan in 2024; however, Leao claimed they haven’t decided which town.

The first two are in Naguilian, La Union, and Cauayan, Isabela, while the most recent was introduced on May 3 in Maragondon, Cavite.

Leao suggested using bamboo fibers for home and apparel textiles.

This can be applied to nonwovens, among other things, to make footwear, bags, and acoustic insulation.

Compared to other sources of fiber, which only have a 2 percent recovery rate, bamboo has at least a 35 percent recovery rate for textile fiber. It is a sustainable source of textile fiber, abundant and robust throughout the nation; he told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

According to him, having a BTFIH enables a community to turn bamboo into raw bamboo textile fiber (BTF), which may then be prepared for textile production.

The technologies are easy to use, scalable, and deploy. According to Leao, the machines can also be made domestically for a larger scale and more widespread deployment.

According to him, the price of raw BTF is roughly PHP250 per kg, compared to PHP10 for bamboo, and the BTFIH would allow for greater material transformation and value addition.

Meanwhile, PTRI claims that the BTFIH Cavite would make sure that bamboo textile fibers are accessible for use in further procedures that result in the production of textiles.

ACCORDING TO THE STATEMENT, the PTRI would use these fibers to spin yarns that the weavers of Maragondon, Cavite, could use.

The hub was additionally supported by the “Field Verification of the Bamboo Textile Material Production and Treatment Technology” initiative of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development.
