DepEd plans to implement updated K–10 curricula in SY 2024–2025.
According to Michael Poa, a representative for the Department of Education (DepEd), the new Kindergarten through Grade 10 (K-10) curriculum will be implemented by the school year (SY) 2024–2025.
According to Poa in an interview, the intended deployment date is in line with DepEd’s promise to collect and take into account all public feedback to improve the K–10 curriculum before it is put into use.
“Of course, ang gusto nating makuha talaga, ay lahat ng comments ng public, ma-consider natin para ma-tweak pa natin further ‘yung K-10 curriculum,” he said, noting that the posted curriculum guide is only a draft. “What we like to happen is to get all the comments to consider and further tweak the K-10 curriculum.”
He added that the mother tongue would still be employed as a “medium of instruction” about the guide.
“Since it’s still a work in progress, we would like your feedback. We want to make it clear that our curriculum guide did not exclude the mother tongue as a medium of education. Mother tongue as an issue was what we eliminated, Poa stated.
The updated curriculum is currently being finalized by the DepEd’s curriculum strand, which is still compiling this feedback.
The DepEd further promised that, for the sake of openness, the modified curriculum guide for Grades 11 and 12 or Senior High School (SHS) draft would be made public once completed.
Revision will come after the proper review, which will come first, according to Poa. “Consultation muna po tayo, and then after that, magkakaroon muna tayo ng review proper and then saka na ‘yung revision,” Poa said.
The DepEd began reviewing the SHS curriculum in November of last year to support the administration’s objective of ensuring employable graduates.
In light of the issues associated with employment mismatch, the DepEd had promised to push for programs that will help strengthen the skills and competency of basic education graduates.
