SHDA Celebrates 53 Years of Building Livable and Affordable Communities

For over half a century, the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association, Inc. (SHDA) has been at the forefront of providing quality housing solutions for Filipino families. Founded in 1970, the association has since been committed to developing livable and affordable communities that promote the well-being of its residents.

This year, the SHDA celebrates its 53rd anniversary on May 18, 2023 at Marquis Events Place in BGC, Taguig City, with a grand celebration recognizing its accomplishments and looking forward to a more sustainable future. This year’s celebration theme is “SHDA: Forging Livable and Affordable Communities Towards Sustainable Nation Building.”

In her message, SHDA Chairman, Ms. Arlene C. Keh highlighted: “In our 53 years of existence, SHDA has steadfastly committed to providing quality homes to Filipinos. We are proud of the milestones we have achieved, including the partnerships we’ve had in the spirit of continuing our mission and vision. As we continue to navigate through the challenges of the industry, we remain committed to our vision of being the leading advocate of sustainable, affordable, and inclusive housing in the Philippines.”

As part of the celebration, Pag-IBIG Fund CEO Ms. Marilene C. Acosta spoke on SHDA and Pag-IBIG Fund’s partnership: “Whenever I am asked why I have devoted all those years to the Pag-IBIG Fund, my answer is always quite simple. It is because Pag-IBIG pursues the same values and advocacies that I hold. I believe that the same holds true for SHDA. Your members’ shared pursuit of your vision and mission has allowed you to remain a strong, vibrant, and crucial partner in developing housing policies in our country.”

SHDA’s involvement extends beyond its partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DSHUD). The association has actively contributed to establishing key institutions that promote the growth and development of the housing sector.

“We are truly thankful that in spite of the challenges along our way, SHDA remains steadfast in its partnership with us. In fact, the association has reinforced this collaboration by showing its unwavering support to the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino (4PH) program.” said DSHUD Undersecretary, Mr. Lyle Pasco, “We are committed to solidifying our partnership with SHDA.”

This unwavering support from the association has reinforced the collaboration and solidified the commitment to work together, as emphasized by Mr. Pasco. SHDA, recognizing the remarkable achievements of its past and the dedication of its predecessors, aims to build on this legacy.

“As we build on their legacy, our overarching theme, ‘Forging Livable and Affordable Communities Towards Sustainable Nation Building,’ guides our every initiative. We will fortify partnerships, activate committees, and expand our reach to further our commitment. We remain steadfast in serving our members and shaping livable, affordable communities, contributing to the broader narrative of sustainable nation-building”, said Ar. Leonardo B. Dayao Jr., National President, SHDA, in his message.

The event was about celebrating SHDA’s achievements and launching new programs and initiatives to further its mission. Among these is the SHDA Cares program, which aims to extend the organization’s reach to more needy communities through various corporate social responsibility initiatives. Co-chaired by Ms. Clarissa G. De Joya and Mr. Herbert Tan, the CSR Committee also launched National Developers Convention 2023, a conference that will bring together experts and stakeholders to discuss current issues and developments in the housing industry. Attendees were also given a sneak peek of what to expect at the 8th Housing Expo, which promises to showcase the latest innovations, trends, and best practices in the industry.

In addition to these new initiatives, the event highlighted the partnership between Habitat for Humanity Philippines and SHDA. As part of the celebration, a ceremonial MOU signing or donation handover between both organizations’ representatives, SHDA Chairman, Ms. Arlene C. Keh, and National President, Ar. Leonardo B. Dayao, Jr., and Habitat for Humanity Philippines’ Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Mardi Mapa-Suplido, took part. This partnership is a testament to SHDA’s commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos through housing and their dedication to working with other organizations to achieve this goal.

As SHDA marks its 53rd anniversary, the association looks forward to a more sustainable future. With the support of its members and partners, SHDA remains committed to creating livable and affordable communities that promote the well-being of its residents.

It is a celebration of the association’s past, present, and future, and a testament to its unwavering dedication to creating livable and affordable communities for all.

SHDA Over the Years

Since its establishment, the SHDA has made significant contributions to the housing industry, such as promoting sustainable building practices and developing eco-friendly communities. Through its various initiatives, the association has helped increase the number of housing options available to Filipinos, especially those from low-income families.

SHDA also played a significant role in the passage of the Urban Development and Housing Act (UDHA) of 1992. The law aimed to provide secure tenure to residents of informal settlements and facilitate the development of affordable housing for low-income families.

Furthermore, the association actively promotes corporate social responsibility among its members, encouraging them to give back to their communities. Through its various initiatives, SHDA has partnered with different organizations to provide relief and support to Filipinos in times of crisis, such as during natural disasters.

In line with its commitment to sustainable development, SHDA has also been promoting the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly materials in housing construction. The association has encouraged developers to integrate solar power systems into their projects through partnerships with renewable energy companies, reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency.

As the Philippines continues to face the challenges of rapid urbanization and a growing population, the SHDA remains committed to providing sustainable housing solutions. The association has been actively advocating for reforms in the housing industry, such as streamlining the permitting process and providing incentives for developers to invest in affordable housing.

Through its various programs and initiatives, SHDA has empowered communities to build better homes and lives for themselves. The association continues to provide training and education programs for its members, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver quality housing solutions.
