On Tuesday, Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, speaker of the House of Representatives, vowed to assist in locating a long-term remedy for the predicament of all sectors impacted by the shutdown of the Central Azucarera de Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) in Nasugbu, Batangas.

After overseeing the delivery of PHP10,000 in cash assistance to each of the 800 sugar farmers who lost their livelihoods due to the closure of the biggest sugar mill in the province, Romualdez made the vow.

“I have asked all government organizations present here to combine their efforts and find a comprehensive, long-term solution to the displacement problem impacting the farm workers and their families. In his brief message, he stated, ” I expect them to submit their reports to my office at the earliest opportunity. Inaasahan ko po ang report nila sa office ko.”

According to him, the effort to aid the sugar farmers has just begun with the financial assistance his office obtained through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

According to Romualdez, “In times of crisis and adversity, everyone must stand together and extend a helping hand to those in need.”

“Today, as we disperse these desperately needed supplies, we are doing more than just giving money; we are giving a ray of hope, a sign of solidarity, and a reminder that no one is alone in their battles. He continued that we can overcome any obstacle that stands in our way if we band together and support one another.

Following the dissolution of CAPDI in December of last year, representatives of the Sugar Folks Unity for Genuine Agricultural Reform (SUGAR) and the Gabriela Party list had already requested the House Speaker’s aid.

In the meantime, DSWD officials promised that comparable payments would be made in the days to come to assist people whom the sugar mill’s shutdown had negatively impacted.
