An Indonesian businessman gives the Philippines P41.6 million.
According to a statement released by Malacanang on Thursday, Indonesian businessman Dato’ Sri Tahir has given the Philippines a donation of roughly PHP41.6 million with a promise to support the social welfare and healthcare initiatives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
During a meeting at Malacanang Palace in Manila on Tuesday, Tahir, the founder of the Indonesian company Mayapada Group, gave Marcos PHP41.6 million, according to Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Garafil.
This occurred while Marcos informed Tahir about the ongoing housing projects and the social welfare initiatives his administration is implementing for the young and elderly.
“We are starting a program for the children living on the streets. We still have homeless people, which is regrettable. Therefore, as quoted by the PCO, “We are trying to take care of them,” Marcos remarked, adding that the government also seeks to offer financial and medical help to senior citizens.
So, this is how we in the Philippines see social work. We want people to be independent of the government as little as possible. And I believe Filipinos share such an attitude. So, it’s a favorable scenario. Thus, that is essentially how we are approaching a new method of performing social work, he continued.
To alleviate the nation’s backlog of over 6.5 million housing units and achieve its target of creating 1 million homes yearly, Marcos said his administration is also being “very aggressive” in its housing program.
“That is a top priority on our agenda. If there isn’t enough housing available, it leads to many societal issues. Without a home of their own, it’s quite difficult for people to be productive, he said to Tahir. “Even if they are merely paying for it, it differs from being squatters or unofficial settlers. Because of this, it’s a top priority. So, the housing market is doing well.
Tahir committed to cooperating with the Marcos regime to provide low-cost housing and social services to help the Filipino people.
He stated that he is also interested in constructing a hospital in the Philippines and mentioned how engaged he is in aiding developing nations with healthcare needs.
He continued by saying that he had given the US government a little over $40 million, helped the UNHCR, and provided aid to nations like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
“We are in charge of Indonesia’s largest private hospital. So perhaps if we could also invest in the hospital hereโฆ Tahir said to Marcos, “I’m interested in anything humanitarian.
“We’ve been active in the area. So, I’m hoping you’ll allow me to make plans to explore [the Philippines] with your support and consent,” he continued.
Tahir’s ideas would be discussed with the relevant government agencies, according to Marcos.
Tahir established the Indonesian conglomerate known as the Mayapada Group, which operates in the banking, healthcare, hotel, real estate, specialty retail, media, and mining sectors.
In the late 1980s, the global LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton) subsidiary Bank Mayapada and its local partner Duty-Free Shopper (DFS) Indonesia launched the Mayapada Group.
