Possible NAIA privatization in Q1 2024
An official of the Department of Transportation stated on Wednesday that the privatization of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) would be put into effect by the first quarter of 2024.
According to Roberto Lim, the undersecretary of transportation for aviation and airports, “it is possible that there will be a conclusion that could be proclaimed by the government,” in an interview with ANC.
That needs time. We will need to speak with every participant if there is more than one. It will require time, he continued.
According to Lim, the privatization of NAIA would increase the effectiveness of passenger and flight movement’s effectiveness and bring in government money.
When NAIA is upgraded, there are many benefits. You create efficiency. He continued that this enables you to handle more passengers, accept more flights, and generate more cash, which increases the government’s part.
Lim explained several concerns related to the airport’s privatization, including the employees’ jobs and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) position after the privatization.
“MIAA and the concessionaire will have a regulator-operator relationship. HE SAID the MIAA will continue to function as a body that oversees and regulates.
“Generally speaking, no job loss. He continued that when the airport facilities are privatized, airport personnel can find employment.
According to Lim, the private concessionaire can only perform operational and management duties at the NAIA, and all airport assets remain the government’s property.
The private concessionaire will have 15 years to operate the airport and recoup its investment after the National Economic Development Authority Board approves the Department of Transportation and MIAA’s joint proposal for the NAIA-initiated Public Private Partnership project.
