As the PNP ramps up its assault on illegal gaming, 41K people are arrested.
In the first half of the year, the Philippine National Police (PNP) conducted 50,000 police operations to target illegal gambling, leading to the arrest of around 41,000 people.
“There are some people who aren’t doing the actual (operations), but I’ve said before that those who are pure online should be doing the actual because the bet is being held up by the korte. Yun is our problem, to put it mildly. The court is searching for the bet, therefore it is tough to link the dots when it comes to actual, especially online [gambling]. Some were captured during the actual activities, but as I mentioned, it is difficult to connect the dots when it comes to actual. That is occasionally a difficulty we have. In regards to the actual operations, they are the obstacles that the police run into,” PNP commander Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said in a radio interview on Tuesday.
Acorda added that they are still pursuing e-sabong (online cockfighting) operators in collaboration with numerous government organizations, particularly those whose purview includes information and communications technology.
“We have ongoing surveillance of e-sabong, yung internet. Ang ating ACG (Anti-Cybercrime Group) ay tuloy tuloy yung kanilang cyber patrolling and also may mga tumutulong din and in coordination with NTC (National Telecommunications Commision), yung mga ibang website ay pinapa-take down natin and so far, we are encountering some in enforcement kasi may mga problema sa batas natin, like yung mga lack of betting kung manghuli tayo, walang nangyari but the betting is done online so pagkonektahin pagdating sa korte. These are the challenges, which we are working hard to overcome in collaboration with other organizations to address (We have ongoing web surveillance for e-sabong. Our ACG claims that they constantly patrol the internet. We also receive some assistance from other organizations, and together with the NTC, we are able to take down other websites. However, there are some issues with enforcement. For instance, online gambling is not included in any of our legislation. Even if we did conduct business, the betting would be done online, so we would have nothing to show the courts. However, we are doing everything we can to take down these websites while working with other organizations to address this issue,” he stated.
An “intensified crackdown” against illegal gambling has been ordered by Acorda, and it is supported by the one-strike and no-take policy.
Police, regional, provincial, and district directors, chiefs of police stations, community precinct commanders, and other unit leaders who are found to be ineffective or lacking in their efforts to eradicate and stop illegal gambling in their respective areas of jurisdiction shall be relieved of their positions.
Furthermore, they will face administrative charges in accordance with the idea of command responsibility.
After the PNP and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) formed an agreement to bolster the national fight against all varieties of illegal gambling, Acorda issued his most recent instruction.
The specialized groups will use their knowledge in intelligence gathering, comprehensive investigations, and strategic interventions to strengthen the country’s battle against unlawful gambling.
“We won’t stand for the establishment of illicit gaming operations that take advantage of our society’s most defenseless citizens. In an earlier statement, Acorda added, “We will deploy all necessary resources and put in place strict measures to put an end to this threat. (
