MIAC reveals plans for NAIA and asserts that PH may become a regional superpower.
The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) rehabilitation plans were revealed by the Manila International Airport Consortium (MIAC) on Monday. They added that their unsolicited proposal, valued at PHP267 billion, would help the country realize its potential as a regional economic hub.
“The Philippines is full of talented English speakers. Your government is well-run, and your workforce is well-educated. In a news briefing, the vice chair of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Jim Yong Kim, remarked, “We cannot allow it to be left behind. In addition, Kim listed access to financial capital and solid transportation infrastructure as other crucial facilitators of any regional economic cluster.
Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc., AC Infrastructure Holdings Corporation, Asia’s Emerging Dragon Corporation, Alliance Global-Infracorp Development, Inc., Filinvest Development Corporation, and JG Summit Infrastructure Holdings Corporation are six other conglomerates that are also members of the MIAC.
According to Kim, they cannot make the error of using a band-aid solution when turning the airport into a regional hub.
MIAC representatives say their main aims involve implementing technology and streamlining the passenger experience. But they avoided becoming too specific.
According to Philip Iley, the chief of transport at GIP, NAIA has outdated technology and processes passengers slowly. Additionally, the MIAC will build more taxiways to facilitate more aircraft mobility.
According to Bryan Co, the person in command of the Manila International Airport Authority, NAIA has several taxiways and currently limits commercial operations to 41 to 42 movements per hour.
The airport’s capacity will be increased from its current 31 million annual passengers to 54 million by 2025 as part of MIAC’s first phase plan, which will be implemented over two years. By 2028, the MIAC hopes to reach its second phase capacity of 62.5 million passengers annually. This can be done by developing the terminal’s floor space, adding amenities to the airport, and enhancing transit between the four NAIA terminals.
By 2048, or during the plan’s third phase, a capacity of roughly 70 million passengers annually is anticipated. Development and expansion projects are also in the works to increase the terminal area and airfield capacity.
Under a 25-year concession agreement, the MIAC has presented an unsolicited proposal to make technological and structural modifications to the NAIA.
When asked what the public might expect if their proposal is granted, such as a change in the terminal fee, a MIAC member responded that they won’t charge more than what is now being charged in the market.
Cosette Anilao, president of Aboitiz InfraCapital, stated that terminal fees will not be greater than those now offered by the market.
Kevin Tan, head of Alliance Global-InfraCorp Development, Inc., stated that now is the perfect time to upgrade NAIA because it acts as the nation’s primary gateway and transit port to other regional centers.
