The Department of Agriculture – Caraga Region (DA-13) said that its repopulation program is succeeding in recovering the region’s hog industry, which had been decimated by the African swine fever (ASF).

The sentinelling program this month would help about 178 hog farmers in the area, according to a statement released by DA-13 on Monday.

“The distribution of sentinel pigs and feeds started on June 8 and will continue until the end of this month to support the repopulation of the hog industry in the region,” DA-13 stated.

For the DA-13’s sentinelling program this month, at least PHP5.2 million of sentinel pigs and PHP2.1 million for meals have been set aside.

65 participants in Agusan del Norte will receive about 195 sentinel pigs, 33 beneficiaries in Surigao del Norte will receive 100, and 80 in Surigao del Sur will receive 240.

The sentinelling is intended to increase hog productivity in the communities that the ASF damaged, according to DA-13.

The disease has impacted the hog business for the past two years when it first appeared in the area in the latter half of 2020.

According to information from DA-13, 3,708 hogs were affected by the ASF, which resulted in losses of almost PHP44 million.

The agency facilitated the 2021 release of PHP6.4 million in indemnification to the impacted hog farmers.

The affected hog farmers were also indemnified by the area’s local governments for the previous two years in the amount of PHP1.8 million from municipal and city governments and another PHP1.8 million from the provincial governments.

To determine whether the illness persists, the sentinelling program is a scientifically grounded preparation for the repopulation of hogs in ASF-affected areas.
