🚆💲 The Department of Transportation (DOTr) stated on Monday that the fare increase in the LRT-1 and LRT-2 rail lines, starting on Aug. 2, is “beneficial and practical” for passengers and operators.

🔝 DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Cesar Chavez emphasized that it has been eight years since the fares of LRT-1 and LRT-2 were adjusted. He assured that the services of both lines have significantly improved and become more efficient.

🔒 Chavez stated that the approved fare increase is necessary for the future sustainability of the rail system. The government must respect its agreements with the private sector while also considering the public’s welfare in the long-term effects on the rail system’s sustainability.

📈 According to Chavez, the LRT-1 and LRT-2 deserve a modest fare increase, as their petitions for fare adjustments were denied in the past eight years. The current rates do not adequately cover the costs, resulting in a government subsidy for each passenger riding end-to-end.

🚇 The new fare structure includes an additional PHP2.29 boarding fare and PHP0.21 distance fare per kilometer on top of the existing fares.

🚇 Chavez also revealed that the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) plans to re-file its petition for a fare adjustment. The previous petition was deferred due to non-compliance with requirements and procedures.

📅 Similar to LRT-1 and LRT-2, there have been no fare adjustments for MRT-3 in the past eight years.

🚇 The LRT-1 runs from Baclaran in Parañaque City to Bago Bantay, Quezon City (Roosevelt), while LRT-2 operates from Recto in Manila to Antipolo City in Rizal. MRT-3 operates along EDSA from Taft Avenue to North Avenue in Quezon City.
