🇯🇵 Japan’s PM Set to Visit 🇵🇭 PH by Year End: Ambassador 📅
According to the Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is anticipated to visit the Philippines in 2023 as both countries aim to strengthen their defense and security cooperation. Koshikawa revealed this information during a reception commemorating the 69th anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) in Makati. Additionally, Japan eagerly awaits President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s participation in the upcoming 50th ASEAN-Japan Friendship anniversary celebration in Tokyo this December.
The ambassador highlighted that collaboration between Manila and Tokyo has experienced remarkable growth since the beginning of the Marcos administration, particularly in defense and security. With the backdrop of global challenges such as the conflict in Ukraine and tensions surrounding the Taiwan Strait, Koshikawa emphasized Japan’s commitment to promoting a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and partnering with Manila to actualize this vision.
Koshikawa remarked, “Given the rapidly changing dynamics in the global landscape, the defense and security cooperation between Japan and the Philippines is gaining increasing significance. We wholeheartedly focus on developing tangible measures to further deepen our defense partnership.”
Prime Minister Kishida and President Marcos had an opportunity to meet during the latter’s official visit to Tokyo in February 2023, during which they signed the Terms of Reference on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) activities of the JSDF in the Philippines.
Furthermore, the Philippines and Japan are strengthening their partnership with the United States, as their coast guards conducted their first-ever joint trilateral exercise this year. Last month, the inaugural Japan-Australia-Philippines-US Defense Ministerial Meeting occurred in Singapore, indicating a growing synergy among like-minded nations.
