According to BI, a comprehensive inspection is essential to stop human trafficking.

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) emphasized the value of comprehensive inspection in preventing Filipinos from becoming victims of human trafficking.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco stated in a statement that the BI’s investigations, particularly its secondary inspection, contribute to identifying potential people trafficking networks.

The prevention of these illicit operations at our airports is largely due to the work of our immigration officials. Our campaign against human trafficking depends on their commitment and diligence in identifying prospective victims, he said.

Tansingco made the allegation in response to another account of an online recruiting in which a 49 Filipina traveling to Amsterdam was purportedly encouraged to make up fictitious departure details.

On July 4, 2016, the interception occurred in Terminal 1 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

“The victim claimed to be a businesswoman visiting Amsterdam during a secondary inspection. She attempted to back her claim by presenting various business documents,” the BI stated.

The victim further revealed during an immigration interview that she had spent roughly PHP148,000 for her ticket and bogus documentation as an entrepreneur.

The victim is currently receiving support from the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking to bring charges against her employer potentially.

Tansingco, despite concerns about long immigration lines and drawn-out inspection processes, remained committed to pursuing strict measures to secure the safety of Filipino tourists.

He stated, “We remain unwavering in our determination to stop human trafficking and defend the rights and welfare of anybody who might become a victim of these unlawful operations.

The NAIA’s commitment to enlarging immigration zones to address issues with lines was already verified by the BI.
