PBBM: Govβt committed to achieving food security, zero hunger
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed his administrationβs commitment to food security and zero hunger as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the implementation of the Reformation Initiative for Sustainable Environment for Food Security (RISE) Project.
The MOA was signed by the DAβs Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and the DOJβs Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) in a ceremony at the Presidentβs Hall of MalacaΓ±an Palace in Manila.
In his keynote speech, Marcos emphasized the importance of the partnership in promoting ecological practices among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and supporting their reformation and rehabilitation.
By investing in capacity-building activities, Marcos stated that they are boosting food production and providing opportunities for positive change and reformation for PDLs.
The cooperation between DA-BPI and BuCor aims to contribute to rehabilitation, reintegration of PDLs, hunger prevention, poverty alleviation, and better health.
Marcos encouraged national government agencies to pursue innovative projects to address evolving needs in this modern age and expedite program delivery and economic growth.
Marcos expressed gratitude to the private sector for their support and dedication to the development of the Filipino people and the nation.
The RISE Project will utilize and rehabilitate arable lands within BuCorβs prison reservations and penal farms nationwide to boost food production.
The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, will be the pilot site, covering around 28,700 hectares of arable land.
The partnership aims to transform land areas into productive agricultural camps, enhance food security, provide training for PDLsβ livelihood preparation and societal reintegration, and improve meal nutrition and dietary quality.
The program includes horticultural therapy, vocational gardening, and the implementation of technology interventions and management systems that can be replicated in other BuCor facilities nationwide.
The program addresses challenges faced by the agricultural sector and the potential impact of El NiΓ±o on food security and sustainability.
