The Department of National Defense (DND) and the United Nations (UN) have renewed their commitment to collaborate in resolving “complex humanitarian issues”. This partnership was reaffirmed during a courtesy call by United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) in the Philippines, Gustavo Gonzalez, to DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on July 12.

In a statement released on Friday, DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong highlighted the need for joint efforts between the Philippines and the UN to address humanitarian challenges. Both parties recognized the growing cooperation, particularly in disaster risk reduction and management.

Gonzalez commended the Philippines as a model country for humanitarian aid, acknowledging its resilience in the face of frequent natural disasters. He praised the country’s well-established systems for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, along with its robust community networks, contributing to effectively handling humanitarian crises.

In response, Secretary Teodoro expressed his intention to re-engineer the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System to enhance its agility, effectiveness, sustainability, and transparency. The aim is to strengthen the country’s capabilities in addressing future challenges more efficiently.

The DND and the UN emphasized their unwavering dedication to working closely and leveraging their strengths to achieve mutual objectives. This collaboration aims to enhance the Philippines’ capacity to respond effectively to humanitarian issues and promote resilience in the face of disasters.
