Pilot Test to Enhance DSWD’s Food Stamp Program – Gatchalian πŸ›£οΈ

πŸŒΎπŸ“†πŸ½οΈ MANILA – Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian announced on Friday that the six-month pilot run of the Food Stamp Program (FSP) will pave the way for improving the program’s systems and mechanisms.

The pilot test aims to prepare the DSWD for the nationwide implementation of the government’s anti-hunger program scheduled for next year.

Secretary Gatchalian emphasized the importance of conducting a larger-scale pilot, as it allows them to gather outcomes from various geographic areas. The DSWD plans to collaborate with other government agencies to complement its efforts in eradicating involuntary hunger and stunting in the country.

Before scaling up the program, Secretary Gatchalian stressed the significance of studying what strategies work best.

Working in tandem with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the DSWD will explore other possible interventions to support the nutritional needs of food-poor families and pregnant and nursing mothers.

Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) definition, food-poor families are households earning below PHP8,000 per month. The FSP is designed to supplement their food intake but does not aim to cover their entire month’s food needs.

Aside from addressing immediate hunger, the program has additional goals, including promoting behavioral changes in beneficiaries’ eating habits.

“We teach food-poor families to purchase right, cook right, eat right at home,” Secretary Gatchalian explained.

He also assured FSP beneficiaries that sufficient merchandise partners would cater to their needs. The DSWD will continue the accreditation process of agri-cooperatives, grocery stores, and small and medium enterprises to ensure access to a wide range of options for beneficiaries.

As the pilot test commences, the DSWD is committed to enhancing the Food Stamp Program and implementing effective strategies to combat hunger and improve nutrition among vulnerable families.
