Crop Climate Calendars Advocated to Boost PBBM’s Climate Change Agenda 🌾📅
📰 MANILA – Pinuno Party-list Rep. Howard Guintu emphasized using “crop climate calendars” nationwide to support President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s climate change agenda.
“Like President Marcos, we believe that our economic agenda needs to align with our climate change agenda. To address the impact of climate change on agriculture, we are calling for the immediate passage of our proposed Climate-Resilient Agriculture Act,” Guintu stated.
The proposed measure, House Bill No. 4418, filed by Guintu, aims to establish tailor-made crop climate calendars for specific localities or communities. These calendars will provide information on crops’ phenology, cultivation practices, and climate-related risks during the growing season.
In collaboration with municipal, city, and provincial agriculturists, the bill mandates the Department of Agriculture (DA) to implement a continuing program to formulate, use, and interpret crop climate calendars, which will be freely distributed to farmers and farmer’s organizations.
Furthermore, the bill requires the DA, through the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), to provide regular training for farmer’s organizations in climate-sensitive decision-making and using relevant tools and applications.
Climate-sensitive decision-making depends on weather and climate conditions and their potential outcomes.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is tasked with providing up-to-date localized weather and climate information to agricultural offices at the municipal, city, and provincial levels, as well as directly to farmers through various means of communication, including the internet, social media, television, and radio.
Guintu stressed that the severe impacts of climate change on the country pose a significant threat to the agriculture sector and food security, necessitating urgent action.
He also highlighted the importance of capitalizing on technological advancements to develop practices and innovations adaptive to climate change in the agriculture sector.
In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 24, President Marcos emphasized that building progressive, livable, and sustainable communities requires responsible action to mitigate and adapt to climate change effects.
Guintu quoted the President, stating, “We can never lose sight of our responsibility to the future. The economic agenda cannot and will never be incompatible with our climate change agenda.” He emphasized that this criterion should guide the government’s policies, planning, decision-making, and program implementation. 🌱🌤️📅
