This year, two hyper scalers from the United States and China will set up shop in the Philippines.
At least two hyper-scale firms will set up shop in the Philippines this year, according to Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) last Sept 1, 2021.
These businesses are from China and the United States, according to Rodolfo, who is also the managing chairman of the Board of Investments (BOI).
โBecause this is a relatively young sector, (interests) vary from exploratory to advancedโฆ Rodolfo stated in a virtual event promoting the Philippines as a key center for hyperscalers in the Asia Pacific area, “We may have at least two hyperscaler investors coming in this year.”
He said that these companies are still researching the green energy industry in the nation as a major driver, as well as the country’s data privacy legislative framework.
Apart from these two firms, numerous hyperscalers are considering setting up shop in the nation.
Hyperscalers are companies that provide scalable data storage.
Alibaba Cloud, Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft are just a few examples of these businesses.
The Philippines, according to DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, is an ideal site for hyperscalers since the country leads the globe in social media and internet use.
E-commerce usage in the Philippines increased from 76 percent in 2020 to 80.2 percent in 2021, according to statistics from the 2021 Digital Report.
There are 89 million active social media users in the nation.
The Philippines was rated 6th in Facebook, 10th in YouTube, 11th in Twitter, and 18th in Instagram in a worldwide social media usage ranking.
According to Frost & Sullivan statistics, the Philippines is one of the nations with the fastest-growing anticipated data center supply over the next three to five years, with a growth rate of 24 percent on average.
He went on to say that the Philippines’ digital environment makes it an excellent location for hyperscalers.
Meanwhile, hyperscaler data centers need a lot of electricity, therefore companies are searching for renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions in their operations.
At the same occasion, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy (DOE) Jesus Cristino Posadas said that the administration has been working for measures to increase renewable energy in the nation.
Renewable energy projects worth PHP221.35 billion were built between 2009 and 2020, providing a total capacity of 2,339 megawatts of clean electricity, he added.
According to Posadas, renewable energy accounts for 29% of total capacity.
According to Posadas, the DOE has granted 928 renewable energy contracts totaling 30 gigawatts of electricity as of May 2021.
