According to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez, a local pharmaceutical business is eyeing the production of Molnupiravir, an oral drug that is supposed to alleviate severe symptoms of Covid-19.

Lopez claimed during President Rodrigo Duterte’s Thursday night Talk to the People that if the bill passes, the drug will be more accessible and affordable to Filipinos.

“If something is made locally, it will be affordable because it will be similar to generics. So that these antiviral treatments, which would destroy the virus, will be more affordable to our countrymen than imported versions,” he remarked in a combination of English and Filipino.

The Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Molnupiravir and the injectable antiviral medication Ronapreve has been granted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Lloyd Laboratories applied for a certificate product registration for locally made Molnupiravir on Dec. 22, 2021, according to FDA Director General Oscar Gutierrez.

Only patients who have tested positive for Covid-19 and have mild to moderate symptoms are prescribed the medication.

Gutierrez emphasized that it should not be used as a preventative measure.

He stated, “It should not be used as a substitute for immunization.”

Aside from Ronapreve and Molnupiravir, the government is considering bringing in Paxlovid, an antiviral drug.

Pfizer and the Philippine government signed a Confidential Declaration Agreement on January 4th, according to Gutierrez, in which the pharmaceutical company will outline its plan to apply for an EUA for Paxlovid.
