DOST’s budget for 2022 will be cut, but eight connected agencies will be given raises.
Secretary Fortunato de la Pena announced on Friday (Jan7) that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will get a budget of PHP24.268 billion this year, allowing for increases in eight of the department’s 18 connected agencies.
In a filmed broadcast aired online, he stated the budget is PHP919.8 million lower than in 2021.
Seventy-seven percent (PHP18.844 billion) is set aside for maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE), with personal services accounting for 19 percent (PHP4.5 billion).
At least 4% of the budget, or PHP888 million, will go toward capital expenditures such as equipment purchases and the continuing of ongoing building and infrastructure projects.
The Secretary’s Office, which includes both central and regional offices, received a PHP176.58 million boost.
“The increase is for MOOE, notably funding for various central office initiatives (PHP331.524 million) and DOST-III (PHP50 million),” according to de la Pena.
The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (up PHP55.77 million), Technology Application and Promotion Institute (additional PHP51.8 million), Philippine Textile Research Institute (additional (PHP39.35), National Research Council of the Philippines (PHP30.04 million), Metals Industry Research and Development Center (PHP20.83 million), and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHP20.83 million) are among the eight agencies that will see budget increases (PHP16.568 million).
“Compared to last year, the other ten attached agencies have lesser budgets,” de la Pena remarked.
