Isabela has imposed a 12-day academic break.

The schools’ division has suspended classes and other teaching-related activities for 12 days from January 17 to January 28 this year, since cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) have risen again in Isabela.

“All synchronous and asynchronous classes should be put on hold while submission of academic requirements and conduct of other teaching-related activities must be shifted to a later date,” Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Madelyn Macalling wrote in a memorandum posted on Friday.

On the issue, Macalling said she engaged Isabela provincial government authorities and education department higher-ups.

“When Covid-19 hazards in their respective localities are high, private schools, in cooperation with their respective parent’s associations, may exercise their own discretion relevant to the suspension of classes and K to 12 learning activities,” she added.

Private schools, she noted, may choose to follow the order at their leaders’ discretion.

“The academic break is in consideration of teachers’ and learners’ health and well-being,” she said, adding that the directive follows the Department of Education’s policy on “academic ease and allowing the suspension of classes in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak.”

Macalling stated that accommodations “must be provided” for “valid reasons” for late submission of criteria.

Non-teaching professionals would be required to work 60 percent on-site for administrative and financial operations, while school directors will prepare alternate work arrangements, she said.

On Friday, Isabela’s cases had grown to 1,575 active cases, with 389 new instances added. The overall number of patients was 62,270, with 2,103 deaths and 58,592 recoveries.

Santiago City, with 442, Cauayan City, with 142, this capital city, with 95, and Cabagan, with 79 instances, are among the areas with a large number of active cases.
