Speaker Lord Allan Velasco said on Tuesday that the House of Representatives has suspended its plenary proceedings until January 24 due to an increase in coronavirus disease (Covid-19) infections in the country.

“Because of the ongoing increase in Covid-19 instances in nearly every area of the city, including the House of Representatives, we have decided to stop plenary meetings for the rest of the week. To control the spread of the fast-moving coronavirus, which has also harmed our members and staff, we made this decision “In a statement, Velasco added.

Over 70 House members and workers have contracted the disease since the beginning of the year, according to Velasco, and many more are undergoing quarantine or self-isolation after exhibiting symptoms or having close contact with those who tested positive for Covid-19.

He emphasized, however, that the House will continue to carry out its “constitutional duty of enacting laws that promote the interests and welfare of our people” while also taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of House members and employees.

“When we returned to a session last Monday, we wasted no time in passing 19 bills on third and final reading, 10 of which are of national importance, including higher education aid, additional benefits for senior citizens, rural financial inclusion, and a tax cut to help the live entertainment industry recover from the pandemic,” he said.

The bicameral committee report on the planned Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act was also ratified, he noted.

“The House will reconvene on January 24, and we expect that the Covid-19 situation will have improved by then, allowing us to complete all pending priority items before the election period,” he stated.
