Former Brexit Secretary David Davis became the most senior member of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party to demand Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation on Wednesday, imploring him in parliament: “In the name of God, go.”

Davis’ stunning remarks came during parliament’s monthly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQ) session, eliciting audible gasps from the audience.

Scandal-hit Johnson had a rough PMQ session, with more letters calling for a leadership election inside the party being handed in earlier in the day.

“I expect my leaders to carry the accountability for the acts they conduct,” Davis, a prominent Conservative, and previous leadership candidate, said in parliament. He did the exact opposite yesterday.”

“You’ve been sitting here for far too long for any good you’ve done. “Go in the name of God.”

Johnson’s previously stated excuse for attending a Downing Street party on May 20, 2020, at a time when Britons were prohibited from gathering due to strict coronavirus restrictions, was that he assumed it was a work event and that he was neither informed of the party ahead of time nor that it violated his own lockdown rules.

Johnson’s justifications, according to Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, are “absurd and frankly preposterous.”

Johnson repeatedly declined to quit in the face of furious inquiries from lawmakers. Despite a vigorous performance, his demands for MPs to wait for the investigation’s findings were welcomed with laughs in the chamber. Johnson has ordered a civil servant to investigate accusations of parties in Downing Street while the rest of the country was shut down.

One of Johnson’s MPs, Christian Wakeford, who was only elected in 2019 for Bury South in northern England, switched from the Conservative Party to the Labour Party — and the announcement came just before Prime Minister’s Question Time.

“You (Johnson) and the Conservative Party as a whole have shown yourselves unable of providing the leadership and government this country deserves,” Wakeford wrote in his resignation letter.

“I have come to the conclusion that the Conservative policies you represent are doing nothing to aid the people of my constituency and, in fact, are exacerbating the everyday problems they confront,” he added.

“The Conservative Party won Bury South for the first time in generations under this prime minister with a platform of unifying, leveling up, and delivering for the people of Bury South,” a defiant Johnson said during Prime Minister’s Questions. Under this prime minister, we will win in Bury South at the next election.”

“I’m determined to establish a new Britain that ensures security, prosperity, and respect for everybody,” Starmer told Johnson, “and I’m glad that Christian has decided to join us in this endeavor.”

If 54 Conservative MPs sign a letter requesting a new leadership election, it will be held automatically. Just around a dozen letters were poured in today alone, putting Johnson’s job in jeopardy.

Many backbenchers in the government are said to be waiting for the results of Johnson’s probe into the lockdown-breaking parties before deciding whether to call a leadership contest.
