Japan and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have exchanged diplomatic notes for a USD4.2 million (about PHP215.9 million) project to deliver shelter kits, health clinic support, and medical equipment to regions hit hard by Typhoon Odette last year.

“Japan wishes to closely work with the Philippines for the earliest recovery of the damaged areas, in view of the friendly relations with the Philippines,” the Embassy stated Thursday.

The initiative is funded by Tokyo’s USD13 million (about PHP663 million) Emergency Grant Aid for Typhoon Odette humanitarian relief efforts in the country.

IOM will receive USD4.2 million under this initiative to fund shelter repair kits for at least 2,420 households, camp coordination and management assistance for 4,000 internally displaced people in 20 evacuation centers, mobile health clinics, capacity building for 7,400 people, and procurement of emergency medical equipment for four health facilities, among other things.

According to the Embassy, the project is being carried out in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services and CARE Philippines and will help an estimated 64,681 people indirectly.

Representatives from the Japanese government and the International Organization for Migration met in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 17 to exchange notes.
