Under Duterte’s administration, a faster internet connection was achieved.

Even before his tenure expires this year, the Duterte administration has delivered on his promise of a quicker internet connection for Filipinos.

Director-General Jeremiah Belgica of the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) stated Friday that a whole-of-government approach to simplifying the process of setting up telecommunications infrastructure aided increases in fixed broadband and mobile data speeds in the country.

According to Ookla, the country’s mobile internet download speed grew to 19.20 megabits per second (Mbps) in December from 18.68 Mbps in November, while fixed broadband download speed increased to 50.26 Mbps from 46.44 Mbps during the same time period.

“It is with great pride that we recognize the telecommunications industry’s and government agencies’ collaborative efforts in continuously providing streamlined guidelines for the issuance of permits, licenses, and certificates for the construction of Shared Passive Telecommunications Tower Infrastructure (PTTIs),” Belgica said in a statement.

A Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) on pole, fiber ducts, and cable laying was issued last month by ARTA, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and other key agencies.

This was ARTA’s third JMC in the telecommunications sector, with the goal of streamlining government processes for issuing permits and licenses for telecoms infrastructure across the country.

“Our country’s competitiveness in our regional and global communities is being boosted by the continual increase in internet speed. “By the conclusion of this Administration’s term, I believe the President will have delivered on his promise to the people of a better and quicker internet connection and services,” the ARTA chief stated.

In the midst of the pandemic, he also underlined the necessity for the country to have a stronger and quicker internet connection, particularly in rural regions.

“In the new normal, the increased trend of connection corresponds with the growing desire for quicker internet activity among Filipinos,” Belgica said. “Most of our transactions nowadays are done online.”

He stated that ARTA will continue to increase its efforts and push for innovation in order to better the government’s manner of dealing with the general population.
