The Chinese government has pledged PHP1 billion in military aid to the Philippines, with the first shipment of roughly PHP614 million in equipment arriving just a week ago.

The equipment, principally trucks, will be formally turned over in February, according to Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian.

“On January 16, the first batch of military equipment worth RMB76 million arrived in Manila, including rescue and relief equipment, which will be formally handed over to the DND and AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) in February. The second batch, valued at RMB54 million, will arrive at a later date “On Saturday, he issued a statement.

The gift was made as part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s 2019 pledge to help and support the Philippine government in its anti-narcotics and anti-terrorism efforts.

Wei Fenghe, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense, formally offered RMB130 million (PHP1 billion) in military aid to the Philippines in 2020.

“I hope that the donation will contribute to the maintenance of peace and the battle against terrorism, as well as humanitarian assistance and the typhoon Odette disaster response operation,” Huang said.

“To the best of China’s capacity, China will continue to support the Philippines’ disaster relief and recovery operations, as well as the AFP capability strengthening,” he added.
