South Korea is culling hens due to H5N1 bird flu outbreaks.
Following outbreaks of the H5N1 avian influenza virus at two farms, quarantine officials in South Korea began slaughtering roughly 427,000 hens on Sunday as a preventive step, according to the agricultural ministry.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs announced two cases of highly virulent avian flu at two poultry farms in Hwaseong, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul.
The ministry did not provide a timeline for when quarantine officers will finish the culling.
Since November 8, the 23rd and 24th cases of a highly virulent strain of H5N1 have been discovered in poultry farms in South Korea.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza is highly contagious among birds and can result in serious disease and even death, particularly in poultry.
According to Statistics Korea, between November 2020 and April 2021, quarantine authorities slaughtered around 30 million poultry after an epidemic of avian influenza was initially recorded.
In the October-December quarter, there were 72.61 million chicken layers in South Korea, up 33,000 from the previous year.
