Due to a surge in new Covid-19 cases in Eastern Visayas, the Department of Health (DOH) has requested hospitals in the region to assess their ability to treat patients and expand the number of beds designated for Covid-19 patients.

Exuperia Sabalberino, regional director of the Department of Health, said on Monday that health facilities should take steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and the threat of the Omicron form in the region.

“With current data on growing cases of Covid-19 throughout the country and documented enhanced transmissibility of the Omicron variety,” Sabalberino wrote in an advisory, “the DOH recommends all hospitals to examine and update their existing Surge Capacity Plans.”

In order to prepare for a spike in cases in the region, health providers should increase their Covid-19 dedicated beds according to the revised alert levels given by the DOH regional office.

In the six provinces of the region, hospitals have 1,557 beds set aside for Covid-19 patients with severe symptoms. According to DOH records, 931 beds were occupied as of Monday.

The region has a 59.79 percent hospital bed utilization rate, which is considered medium risk. Tacloban City, Ormoc City, and Biliran province, out of six provinces and two cities, have high hospital bed usage rates ranging from 78 percent to 83 percent, putting them at high risk.

On Monday, the Department of Health reported 254 verified new Covid-19 instances, down from 420 cases discovered through testing on Sunday and 642 cases reported on Saturday. The current rate of optimism is still high, at 53%.

According to the health authorities, the region first registered over 100 new cases on January 8 after more than two months of case decline.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the region has seen 58,523 cases, with 53,884 recoveries and 635 fatalities. As of January 24, there were 4,004 active Covid-19 cases.
