The first death from dengue hemorrhagic fever was reported by the city health office (CHO) this year.

In a statement released Monday, Dr. Cathy Garcia, assistant municipal health officer, said the first dengue death was a seven-year-old kid from Barangay Bolong, east of the city.

Garcia did not indicate when the boy died, only that he was one of 64 dengue fever cases reported from January 1 to January 19.

Garcia recommended parents seek medical help as soon as their children show signs of dengue fever to avoid future difficulties.

Dengue fever is characterized by a high fever, as well as headache, muscle, bone, or joint pain, nausea, vomiting, pain behind the eyes, swollen glands, and rash.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can be found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It can be lethal if left ignored.

To prevent dengue fever in the community, Garcia recommended locals practice the “4S” practices.

These include searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, taking self-defense measures, seeking early consultation, and refusing to fog indiscriminately.
