The distribution of additional Covid-19 doses for the A2, A3 groups has begun.
The government officially launched the first phase of additional and booster shot administration to senior citizens and immunocompromised people on Monday.
Additional doses will benefit approximately 8.2 million elderly (A2) and 8.4 million adults with comorbidities (A3).
During a press conference, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III stated that the second phase of booster vaccination will cover the entire A3 category.
For the time being, only those with immunodeficiency, human immunodeficiency virus, active cancer or malignancy, transplant patients, and those undergoing immunosuppressive treatments are eligible.
“If we can vaccinate one million people per day, more or less, in about eight days, we can inoculate eight million senior citizens, and if we include the A3, that’s another eight million people in about 16 working days (If we can vaccinate one million people per day, more or less, we can inoculate 8.4 million senior citizens in about eight days, and it will be the same if you include the A3). That’s an additional $8 million, allowing us to complete the task in 16 working days) “Duque made the remarks at the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City during a ceremonial booster vaccination.
The target timeline for boosters may still change, according to Duque, because the government is simultaneously distributing primary doses to the general population, pediatric vaccinations to children aged 12 to 17, and booster shots to health care workers (A1).
“Theoretically, it could be done in eight days,” he said. “However, I’d like to clarify that they are not the only ones being vaccinated.”
According to Duque, eligible individuals can select either heterologous (mixed) or homologous (same brand) booster vaccines.
Pre-registration, according to DOH Director Gloria Balboa, is recommended for a more efficient vaccination process.
“Yung dati na proseso natin gagamitin po natin. We are still encouraging people to pre-register so that there will be more maayos and mabilis (We will use the previous process.) We continue to encourage pre-registration in order to have a more organized and faster vaccination process) “She stated.
She stated that the booster dose should be given six months after the second dose, with the exception of the single-dose Janssen jab, which requires an additional dose after three months.
“So ‘pag nag-pre-register, nava-validate po iyon kung talagang eligible na ho sila,” she explained.
The government began administering booster shots to at least 1.6 million health care workers last week, with the goal of inoculating all eligible medical front-liners by the end of November.
Local governments have yet to issue guidelines for the administration of additional A2 and A3 vaccines, but the DOH has stated that vaccinees can go to any inoculation site at any time and present their vaccination cards or certificates.
