Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian said on Tuesday that now that microgrids have been established, expect a surge in development in rural areas across the country, with the prospect of achieving 100% electrification of every household by the end of the year.

Republic Act 11646, or the Microgrid Systems Act, was signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on January 21. Gatchalian was the lone author and sponsor in the Senate.

Because microgrid system providers (MSPs) will now be able to operate in any part of the country, RA 11646 directs the Department of Energy (DOE) to identify unserved and underserved areas for electrification and service by prospective MSPs, paving the way for private sector accredited MSPs to enter the market without the need for waivers from incumbent distribution utilities.

Unserved areas do not have access to electricity, while underserved areas have electricity for less than 24 hours per day.

The Senate Energy Committee chairperson stated that the process of electrification would now be accelerated by utilizing various technologies to deliver reliable energy service.

Small-scale power generation facilities or decentralized power generation (DPG), batteries, and renewable sources such as solar and wind can all be used to power a microgrid.
