The Department of Tourism (DOT) stated on Wednesday night that the Berjaya Makati Hotel’s suspension has been reduced from three to two months, taking into account the hotel’s employees who will be affected by the temporary shutdown.

“The suspension of the hotel’s certification has been confirmed by the Department of Tourism. The initial three-month ban period was lowered to two months after Berjaya Makati Hotel filed an appeal “In a statement, it said. “The Department of Transportation sympathizes with the hotel’s employees who will be directly harmed by this decision, particularly during this time of the pandemic.”

In December of last year, the hotel was suspended for letting Gwyneth Chua, also known as “Poblacion Girl,” a traveler from the United States, leave while still under required quarantine.

Chua was spotted in a bar in Poblacion, Makati, and was later diagnosed with the coronavirus illness 2019. (Covid-19).

The department affirmed its order revoking the hotel’s authority to operate as a multiple-use hotel (MUH), which allows establishments to accommodate both staycation guests and returning overseas Filipinos undergoing quarantine, in a separate letter signed by DOT – National Capital Region officer in charge Sharlene Zabala-Batin on January 19.

Berjaya’s PHP13,200 penalties for violating health and safety procedures were also upheld.

Berjaya may reopen as a quarantined hotel or apply for a new authority to operate as a MUH, according to the DOT.

With the issuance of its “Enhanced Quarantine Procedures and Control,” the hotel management has pledged to implement tougher steps in the future to prevent similar events, according to the report.
