The Department of Agriculture (DA) has declared its support for Senate Bill 139, also known as the Philippine Livestock Industry Development Act, and four other livestock-related laws.

DA Secretary William Dar said in a statement on Thursday that he appreciates the efforts to improve the agriculture industry, but that there are other areas that require attention.

“With the correct budget allocation and government backing, the cattle industry would rebound, contributing its share of overall agriculture sector growth,” Dar predicted.

SB 139 aims to boost the cattle sector by promoting its development, protection, and regulatory functions. It was mostly written by Senators Cynthia Villar and Nancy Binay.

Dairy and native animals, as well as poultry, are included in the measure. Its goal is to create a livestock development fund that will receive yearly government funding.

Dr. William Medrano, the DA’s undersecretary for livestock, has also emphasized the importance of this law, citing the farm sector’s critical issues.

“We believe this bill is very relevant and necessary to the industry’s overall and speedy development,” Medrano said in a virtual presentation earlier.

Programs targeted at boosting the competitiveness of the livestock and maize industries will be formed under the proposed livestock bill.

Senator Sonny Angara introduced Senate Bill 821, the Philippine Native Animal Development Act; Senator Ralph Recto introduced Senate Bill 1048, which provides direct financial assistance to backyard livestock raisers; Sen. Lito Lapid introduced Senate Bill 1297, also known as the Livestock-Related Disease Diagnostic Laboratory Act; and Sen. Francis Pangilinan.
