New ‘Odette’ coronavirus aid for PH has been announced by the EU

According to the European Delegation in Manila, the European Commission is contributing 21 million euros (about PHP1.19 billion) to help populations affected by catastrophes, wars, and the pandemic in certain Asian countries, including the Philippines.

“(T)yphoon Rai (Odette) has served as a sobering reminder that countries in Southeast Asia are already feeling the effects of climate change.” This is why, in a statement, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenari said, “the EU is boosting up its humanitarian support to the most vulnerable affected by natural disasters in the Philippines, Nepal, and the region.”

“We also support people in the Philippines who have been harmed by protracted conflict, while increasing our investment in the planning and response to the coronavirus pandemic.”

The victims of “Odette,” which wreaked havoc on numerous parts of the Philippines in December 2021, will receive 10 million euros in humanitarian aid as part of the total amount.

On the other hand, some 1.5 million euros will be used to help communities affected by the country’s long-running conflict, as well as the government’s attempts to combat the coronavirus.

The EU stated that the Philippines’ current aid would be prioritized for the most vulnerable, conflict-affected communities in Mindanao in need of food, protection, emergency livelihood, health, water, sanitation, nutrition, and emergency shelters.

The remaining 9.5 million euros will be used to support disaster preparedness and response programs in Nepal and other Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines.

In countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, the EU sponsors initiatives aimed at improving community resilience and disaster preparedness.

Manila has received more than 153.5 million euros in humanitarian aid from the European Commission, the EU’s executive department, since 1996.
