Crop insurance has been enrolled by over 83K NegOcc farmers.

According to the most recent data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, 83,247 farmers in Negros Occidental were enrolled in the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program (NFUCIP) as of the end of 2021. (OPA).

The province’s officer-in-charge, Dina Genzola, said in a statement on Thursday that the effort aims to assist farmers who have been impacted by typhoons and allow them to resume planting.

Farmers have insured a total of 93,374.84 hectares of rice, corn, and high-value crops, as well as fisheries.

45,415 people were recruited, and they obtained indemnity claims of PHP213.455 million, covering 43,367.09 hectares of damaged crops.

428 farmers in Pontevedra town were among the newest recipients, receiving PHP1.978 million in insurance claims during a distribution at the municipal gym on Wednesday.

Genzola, together with Fourth District Board Member Jose Benito Alonso and Pontevedra Mayor Jose Maria Alonso, led the program.

The NFUCIP is a cooperative project of the Province of Negros Occidental and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, also known as the Agri-Fishery Insurance Program (PCIC).

With agriculture as one of its top priorities, the provincial government regularly contributes funding to the initiative to close the gaps in the agriculture sector caused by climate change, which has harmed crop productivity and jeopardized the province’s food security.

The provincial government pays the enrollment premium per planting season as a loan.

The province pays the PCIC PHP1,175 in enrollment premiums each farmer, including life insurance.

Those who enlist are eligible for financial compensation for crops destroyed by natural disasters, pests, and disease infestations.

A claim of PHP17,000 per hectare of damaged farmland is available to each farmer.
