Despite the decline in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, the Presidential adviser for entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion is warning Filipinos not to relax their guard because a new variant has been identified in South Africa.

Concepcion said in a statement Friday that the country must avoid another surge in order to keep the economy open.

“If we want to keep the economy open, we must act now and vaccinate all of our employees and family members, as well as follow all health protocols and guidelines.” Since then, the private sector has been proactive in calling a lockdown and securing vaccines. “Right now, we’re collaborating to figure out how to keep this momentum going and avoid another surge,” he said.

Concepcion recalled that the private sector was proactive in calling an early lockdown in Metro Manila in August last year to prevent the Covid-19 Delta variant from spreading further.

The Department of Health reported 863 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the third day with fewer than 1,000 cases.

Concepcion also urged the private sector to remain vigilant despite the progress made in reopening businesses, as well as the general public to continue to follow public health and safety protocols.

The presidential adviser added that stakeholders should be proactive once more with the new Covid-19 variant, known as B.1.1.529, which was first discovered in South Africa and is thought to be more transmissible than the Delta variant.

Two cases of the B.1.1.529 variant were discovered within Hong Kong’s borders, according to the Hong Kong government.

In Botswana, four cases of the new variant have been confirmed.

Meanwhile, during its “Vax to the Max: Preventing the Surge” town hall meeting on December 15, Go Negoyso will bring together data and medical experts, key government officials, and the private sector to discuss how the country can move forward in preventing another surge in cases amid threats of a new variant.

Go Negosyo is also founded by Concepcion.
