The first worldwide accord on AI ethics has been adopted by 193 countries.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a historical statement on Thursday that describes the common values and principles required for the healthy development of artificial intelligence (AI).
From purchasing flights and applying for loans to steering self-driving cars, AI is everywhere. It’s also employed in specialist industries like cancer screening and assisting in the creation of accessible surroundings for the impaired.
According to UNESCO, AI is also assisting governments and the commercial sector in making decisions, as well as assisting in the combat of global issues such as climate change and world hunger.
The organization does caution, though, that the technology is posing “unprecedented challenges.”
“To mention a few, we’ve seen an increase in gender and ethnic bias, serious risks to privacy, dignity, and agency, the perils of mass monitoring, and the rising use of flawed AI technology in law enforcement. There were no international standards to provide an answer to these questions until today “In a statement, UNESCO noted.
As a result, the agreed document aims to steer the creation of the required legal framework to ensure that this technology develops ethically.
“For artificial intelligence to be beneficial to humanity, the world requires laws. A prominent response is the recommendation on AI ethics. It establishes the first global normative framework while entrusting States with the task of implementing it at the national level. UNESCO will assist its 193 Member States in implementing the Convention and will ask them to report on their progress and practices on a regular basis “Audrey Azoulay, the director-general of UNESCO, stated.
The essay seeks to emphasize AI’s benefits while minimizing the hazards it implies.
It is a guide to ensure that digital transformations promote human rights and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, according to the agency, addressing issues such as transparency, accountability, and privacy, as well as action-oriented policy chapters on data governance, education, culture, labor, healthcare, and the economy.
One of its primary demands is that data be protected, going beyond what technology companies and governments are doing to ensure greater protection for individuals by assuring transparency, agency, and control over their personal data.
The recommendation also expressly prohibits AI systems from being used for social scoring or mass monitoring.
The document also emphasizes that AI actors should prioritize data, energy, and resource-saving strategies in order to ensure that AI becomes a more significant instrument in the battle against climate change and other environmental concerns.
“Fair, transparent, and contestable decisions affecting millions of people should be made. These new technologies must assist us in addressing, rather than exacerbating, today’s main concerns, such as rising inequality and the environmental catastrophe “UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences, Gabriela Ramos, stated.
