A bill proposing the establishment of Timbangan ng Bayan centers in all public and private markets around the country was unanimously adopted on the third and final reading in the House of Representatives.

House Bill 3255, which allows for the establishment of a Timbangan ng Bayan Center in all markets countrywide to safeguard consumers from fraudulent and unfair sales acts and practices, was adopted by the parliament with 175 positive votes during Monday’s plenary session.

Consumers will be able to use Timbangan ng Bayan Centers to verify the correctness of the weight and quantity of the goods they are purchasing.

According to the bill, a Timbangan ng Bayan Center would be built in public and private marketplaces, including flea markets, where weight-and-measurement tools will be open and accessible to anybody who wishes to precisely weigh and measure the things they buy.

The cost of the proposed law’s initial implementation would be deducted from the national tax allotment and other finances of the local government units (LGUs) involved.

Bulacan Rep. Lorna Silverio, the bill’s author, claimed the planned Timbangan ng Bayan centers will improve transparency for customers and hold unscrupulous traders accountable in her sponsorship speech.

The bill stipulates that market supervisors be in charge of the safekeeping and upkeep of those devices.

Every product found to be underweight or inferior must be recorded by market supervisors, who must also identify the offending establishment and its owner or manager.
