During the Omicron wave, SoKor’s new Covid-19 cases reached a new high of 38,691
The highly transmissible Omicron variety rages across South Korea following the holiday season, with daily viral cases surpassing 38,000 on Sunday.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the country reported 38,691 new Covid-19 infections, including 38,502 local cases, bringing the total to 1,009,688. (KDCA).
On Sunday, the total number of viral cases in the country topped one million, two years after the country’s first Covid-19 case was announced.
On Saturday, just three days after breaching the 20,000 mark, the daily tally surpassed 30,000 for the first time. On Jan. 26, the total surpassed 10,000 for the first time.
Over the last two weeks, the highly contagious Omicron variety has caused a five-fold increase in new daily cases.
Following the three-day Lunar New Year holiday, which concluded Wednesday, health officials fear that daily instances could surpass 100,000 in the coming weeks.
The death toll from Covid-19 has risen to 6,873, an increase of 15 since Saturday. A death rate of 0.68 percent was recorded.
A 16-year-old high schooler in the southern city of Gwangju died Saturday while undergoing treatment, making this the country’s first Covid-19 mortality among adolescents.
According to the KDCA, the number of critically ill Covid-19 patients was 272, down three from the day before.
Patients receiving at-home care increased by 10,684 from the previous day to a total of 128,716. The country’s maximum care capacity for people treated at home, according to the authorities, is 106,000.
Seoul recorded 7,778 new locally transmitted cases, while the surrounding Gyeonggi Province and the western metropolis of Incheon reported 11,924 and 2,227 new patients, respectively.
The number of cases imported from other countries increased by 189 to 26,339, according to health officials.
Booster shots had been given to 28.17 million people, or 54.9 percent of the country’s 52 million residents, as of Saturday. A total of 44.11 million people were fully immunized, accounting for 86.0 percent of the population.
To combat the virus, the government has decided to extend the present social distancing restrictions for two more weeks, from Monday to February 20.
Private gatherings of more than six individuals are prohibited under the plan, and companies are subject to a curfew of 9 p.m.
Starting Monday, the government will cut the age of eligibility for Covid-19 therapy pills from 60 to 50.
The vaccine pass scheme, which requires people to produce confirmation of Covid-19 vaccination or negative test results when accessing 11 types of multiuse venues, including restaurants, cafes, and sports arenas, will remain in place.
Other establishments that were spared from the campaign, such as department stores and cram schools, will be subject to a new set of antivirus measures beginning Monday.
According to the authorities, the precautions include limiting the overall number of users and prohibiting any events or eating inside.
