In NegOcc, nearly 15K AstraZeneca doses are about to expire.
On November 30, the provincial government of Negros Occidental announced that a total of 1,492 vials or 14,920 doses of AstraZeneca vaccinations had expired.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II stated on Thursday that they had submitted a report to the Department of Health (DOH)-Western Visayas, which will also refer the case to the national Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Claudelia Josefa Pabillo, in charge of the Provincial Health Office cold room facility, submitted an incident report.
“Vaccines are important to us. We’d like to make use of them. We do not wait, but we place higher importance on the vaccines. Diaz told reporters, “We don’t want to inject vaccines that are going to expire.”
He explained that because the vaccine’s efficacy declines as the expiration date approach, delivering them could offer the receiver a false sense of security and potentially put the vaccinee and his or her family at risk.
Local government units have also refused to accept immunizations that are close to expiring, according to Diaz.
Meanwhile, according to Pabillo, the expired vaccines were among the 4,530 vials or 45,300 doses that arrived in Negros Occidental on November 8.
She went on to say that while the majority of the vaccines from the batch had been distributed, the province was unable to deliver the remainder as the expiration date approached.
Some LGUs were hesitant to accept them, but she added that with the emergence of more vaccination brands, they now had more options.
The expired vaccines, according to Pabillo, are still kept in the cool room, but separated from the rest of the vaccine supply.
“These are biological products, therefore we can’t throw them away.” “It can be disposed of in a different way,” she continued.
