A new Department of Education office intends to strengthen the ALS program.
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) program will be overseen by a new bureau established by the Department of Education (DepEd).
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a statement on Tuesday that the newly constituted bureau will boost the out-of-school youth program by serving as the focal office for its implementation.
“This will improve our initiatives, programs, and policies for out-of-school children, teenagers, and adults as we maintain their educational continuity so that they can gain basic and functional literacy, life skills, and pursue a comparable pathway to complete basic education,” she said.
The bureau is part of the Curriculum and Instruction strand and is responsible for providing communication and coordination channels as well as implementation mechanisms for the ALS program across the department’s central, regional, and schools division offices.
“This demonstrates the Department of Education’s strong commitment to providing education and assist out-of-school children, youth, and adults in attaining their ambitions for the betterment of their and their community’s future,” Briones stated.
The agency was established in accordance with Republic Act No. 11510, also known as the Alternative Learning System Act.
As of November 18, the DepEd reported that the ALS enrolment for the school year 2021-2022 was 239,616.
The number of students enrolled is 359,749, down from 599,365 the previous year.
