In a foiled drone strike in Saudi Arabia, Pinoy receives minor injuries.
On Friday night, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced that a Filipino national was injured in an attempted Houthi drone strike on Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport.
On February 10, the Saudi Air Defenses intercepted the unmanned aircraft, but part of its debris crashed near the airport, injuring 12 civilians.
“The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah is in contact with Filipinos who have been affected by the Saudi airport incident. He suffered minor injuries but is in good health “In a text message, DFA Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Cultural Diplomacy Gonar Musor said.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency reported that the bomb-laden drone “deliberately and systematically” targeted citizens and airport workers at Abha International Airport, citing authorities.
Two Saudi citizens, four Bangladeshi ex-pats, three Nepalese nationals, one Sri Lankan, and one Indian were also injured, according to the report.
“Today’s hostile, terrible attempt to strike Abha International Airport and its multinational traveling passengers in a planned, systematic manner is an act of war,” said Brig. Gen. Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen.
“These activities confirm the militia’s hostile nature, as well as its violations of customary International Humanitarian Law (IHL), which classifies Abha International Airport as a Civilian Object protected by the IHL.”
In the meantime, the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia stated it is working closely with local authorities to assure the security and safety of all Filipinos in the country.
“In the event of an emergency, we advise Filipino nationals to remain vigilant, check security warnings, and contact the Philippine Embassy or Philippine Consulate General on our emergency hotlines,” it said in a second statement on Saturday. “We stand with the rest of the world in asking for an end to violence against civilians.”
