Ilonggo doctors advise parents to have their children undergo Covid vaccines.
CITY OF ILOILO β The Philippine Pediatric Society, Inc. Western Visayas branch has endorsed the ongoing vaccination campaign for children aged 5 to 11, which they believe is the most efficient strategy to avoid coronavirus sickness in 2019. (Covid-19).
Even if their Covid-19 infection is minor and even asymptomatic, children in this age range are at a higher risk of acquiring more severe Covid-19 like the Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C), according to a statement issued by its president, Dr. Teresa C. Martirez-Hallegado.
According to the statement made on Tuesday, MIS-C is a disorder that can impair practically all of the body’s organs, particularly the heart.
“A youngster with MIS-C may develop myocarditis or heart inflammation.” Even if the infection was moderate or asymptomatic, this can occur two to six weeks after a child gets Covid-19, according to the statement.
Vaccination of youngsters aged 5 to 11 is likewise safe, according to Ilonggo doctors.
“Let us demonstrate our love for children by providing them with extra protection from Covid-19.” To minimize confusion, we further advise parents and guardians to read and listen exclusively to information on Covid-19 infection and vaccine from reputable sources,” according to the statement.
Meanwhile, Hallegado claimed in a virtual press conference on February 14 that no adverse events had been observed following their monitoring of the rollout in three immunization sites in the city and two sites in the province of Iloilo.
For the provincial government’s rollout, pediatricians monitored vaccinations at SM City, Festive Walk at Megaworld, and Robinsons Jaro in Iloilo City, as well as at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) cultural center and Robinsons Mall in Pavia.
She stated that they had received reports of youngsters sobbing, which she stated was to be expected regardless of the vaccine type.
Parents should mentally and emotionally prepare their children for the vaccination, according to Hallegado.
“Be truthful with the youngsters.” Prepare them for pain during the injection and at the place where the injection will be administered. “They shouldn’t be terrified, and they should understand that it’s an extra layer of protection,” the doctor advised.
The immunization, according to Hallegado, is also the students’ preparation for the new normal, which includes being able to attend face-to-face classrooms and participate in sports and other social activities that are crucial in a child’s or adolescent’s growth.
In the same press conference, Dr. Renilyn Reyes, head of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) Public Health Program Development Cluster, said that the children should bring their identification cards as well as proof of affiliation for their parents or guardians.
They can also bring a secondary identity or request a certification from their barangay that includes the name of the child who needs to be vaccinated as well as the parent or authorized guardian.
Dr. Maria Socorro Quinon, head of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO), said in an interview on Tuesday that the initial rollout of the pediatric immunization for children aged 5 to 11 years old in Iloilo province serviced 2,043 children.
The province aims to vaccinate 267,470 children aged 5 to 11 years old by the end of the week, with 10,000 doses administered.
Meanwhile, the city government of Iloilo has vaccinated 290 youngsters.
The local government will offer a weekend vaccination to accommodate additional youngster vaccinees, according to Annabelle Tang, the in-charge of the City Health Office.
