MANILA, Philippines — More doses of Pfizer’s reformulated coronavirus vaccine arrived Wednesday night, bolstering the country’s vaccine supply for youngsters aged 5 to 11.

A total of 780,000 tablets were sent to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport by the national government via the World Bank, adding to the 2.3 million reformulated doses that the Philippines got earlier this month.

Undersecretary Isidro Purisima, representing Carlito Galvez Jr., the main implementer of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF Against Covid-19), advised parents and guardians to get their children inoculated against the disease.

Purisima, who was among the officials who praised the latest vaccination delivery, said, “We need the vaccine to open up the economy, the classrooms, especially among youngsters.”

The vaccine will be administered in a routine vaccination regimen for children aged 5 to 11. Its dosage and concentration are lower than those provided to minors aged 12 to 17.

To far, the Pfizer vaccine is used for pediatric vaccination because it is the only vaccine that has acquired an emergency use license from the Food and Drug Administration for children aged 5 to 11.

“We appreciate the US government’s assistance in facilitating the delivery of these vaccines once again. We also appreciate the World Bank’s financial support “Purisima remarked.

Ted Herbosa, special medical adviser for the NTF Against Covid-19, announced in a press conference on Wednesday that minors can now be inoculated in all regions.

“The government is also increasing the distribution of complete doses for teenagers aged 12 to 17,” Herbosa said, adding that the country’s vaccine supply is sufficient.

As of February 9, nearly 128 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been provided, according to the Department of Health’s Covid-19 immunization dashboard.
