The IATF will finalize Alert Level 1 metrics, according to the director of the DILG.
MANILA, Philippines – Secretary Eduardo Año of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) stated on Friday that the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) is ready to finalize the metrics for areas that will be demoted to Alert Level 1.
The National Capital Region (NCR) is qualified to be dropped to Alert Level 1 based on the measurements, but the question of the region’s preparation for the significant transition remains, as several sectors have expressed fear that another coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19) surge could result.
“Metro Manila is qualified based on the measures, but the question is if Metro Manila is ready, to which the mayors responded affirmatively. Second, since Alert Level 1 is a substantial shift from Alert Level 2, it requires the President’s approval, thus we have yet to finish it,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the 36th Edsa People Power Revolution anniversary ceremonies at the People Power Monument.
It would be preferable, according to Año, to wait for President Rodrigo Duterte to announce whether or not the Alert Level 1 de-escalation in Metro Manila and other regions of the country will be approved.
“On Saturday, there will be a presentation and a vote on data analytics. Then we’ll make a recommendation to the President on which areas should be deescalated to Alert Level 1,” he said.
Regarding the start of the local election campaign on March 25, Año emphasized that Resolution 10732 of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is based on the country’s alert level system.
“In regions where Alert Level 1 is in effect, capacity for both indoor and outdoor campaign activities will be limited to 70%,” he stated.
However, according to Año, the IATF is debating whether only people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 would be allowed to engage in election campaign activities.
