Over 800 farms in Legazpi will receive free fertilizers.
LEGAZPI CITY, PHILIPPINES – On February 26 and 27, the Department of Agriculture (DA) provided fertilizer to at least 815 members of the Legazpi City Farmers’ Association.
These farmers have formally enrolled with the Registry System for Basic Sector of Agriculture (RSBSA), according to Shiela Nas, chief of the City Agriculture Office (CAO).
“As part of (DA’s) Hybrid Cluster Voucher Program (HCVP), we provided them a voucher for PHP1,500 for a half-hectare rice field and PHP3,000 for a one-hectare rice field and turned it into urea fertilizers,” she said in an interview Sunday.
Nas stated that farmer recipients will use their fertilizers to sow hybrid and inbred palay seeds in their farmland in order to boost yields and income.
“Right now, we have 525 hectares of rice fields in Legazpi producing an average of 120 bags of hybrid palay per hectare and 90 bags of certified seeds palay,” she noted.
Nas explained that the planting supplies for hybrid palay and fertilizers were given to farmers for free as part of the DA’s subsidization initiative to help farmers, particularly those in the agricultural sector, improve their livelihood.
Planting hybrid palay is beneficial for rainy days or in agricultural areas with good irrigation, according to her, because it ensures a constant supply of water throughout the cropping season.
Rico Arango, a member of the Banquerohan Farmers Association (BFA), said he is “very grateful” for the fertilizer assistance since it may be used to plant palay, which is largely reliant on fertilizers.
“In the community, members of the agricultural industry, who are largely farmers, are considered impoverished families. But, because of these free fertilizers, we can avoid high-interest loans,” Arango explained.
Residents of Maslog, Cagbacong, Banquerohan, Bariis, Buenavista, San Francisco, Imalnod, Taysan, and Mariawa in the city’s southern reaches are among the 416 farmers who would benefit.
The remaining 399 people who will benefit from the initiative are from the northern barangays of Bonga, Pawa, Bogtong, Matanag, Dita, Padang, San Joaquin, Buyuan, Bagong Abre, Bigaa, Arimbay, Tamaoyan, and Rawis.
Puro, Buraguis, and East Washington, all of which are close to the city center and have agricultural lands, are examples.
