Comelec receives assistance from a tech titan in the fight against misinformation.
MANILA, Philippines โ Google Philippines will be one of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) partners in directing voters to fact-check material on the May 9 polls.
When viewers search for candidate names on Google’s video-sharing site, YouTube, election information panels will appear on top of search results.
It will contain information about the candidates, their political parties, the position for which they are running, and other pertinent details.
A “how to vote” information panel will be there, as well as links to the Comelec website.
“Comelec’s objective includes providing voters with accurate, timely, and relevant information. We applaud Google for taking significant steps toward assisting Filipinos in gaining access to authoritative information, which is critical for a well-informed electorate “Director James Jimenez, the head of the Comelec’s Education and Information Department and a spokesperson, said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday.
According to Emily Moxley, vice president of product management at YouTube, the capabilities were included because politics is prone to misinformation and the availability of reliable information sources is critical.
“Over the last few years, we’ve made significant investments to make YouTube a more dependable news source while keeping the platform’s openness. Our efforts are ongoing, and we remain dedicated to making YouTube a lively and safe space for healthy political debate and election integrity protection “In the same briefing, she stated.
Over 400,000 films published from the Philippines were banned from YouTube between February 2021 and January 2022 for breaking community guidelines, according to Google.
“Fighting disinformation is crucial to Google, and addressing it requires the entire society to work together. Google Asia Pacific News Lab lead Irene Jay Liu said, “We will continue to establish significant collaborations with the media and community groups to assist people to obtain the proper information so they can make an informed vote in the future elections.”
