BALANGA CITY. After paralytic shellfish poisoning samples obtained in coastal towns and this city were confirmed to be negative, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) withdrew the shellfish prohibition in Bataan (PSP).

According to provincial agriculturist Joey Roberto Dizon, BFAR issued Shellfish Advisory No. 08 dated March 2, 2022, based on the results of the fishery agency’s and local government units’ red tide monitoring activities (LGUs).

Three weeks of sampling in the municipalities of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Pilar, Orion, Limay, Mariveles, and Balanga City yielded no results for the PSP or red tide toxin.

After shellfish grown in certain coastal locations were found to be unfit for human consumption due to the presence of red tide, BFAR announced a shellfish ban on Nov. 6, 2021, and Feb. 25, 2022.

Dizon claimed that now that the restriction has been lifted, eating, gathering, harvesting, and marketing shellfish from the eight villages and a metropolis is legal.

According to him, the BFAR and the LGUs are constantly monitoring the coastal waters of Bataan to preserve public health and the fishery industry. (
