Vaccination is still the most effective way to combat the Omicron outbreak.
According to Presidential Adviser for Covid-19 Response Vivencio Dizon, the Philippine government believes that increasing its immunization program against coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) will aid the country in handling the new surge brought on by the presence of the Omicron variety.
Dizon said the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF) will use the same tactics it used during the Delta variant surge now that the health agency is seeing a large increase in daily cases during the Laging Handa briefing.
“However, we must keep in mind that we have been through this before.” This is the fourth increase since 2020. “We’ve had a Delta surge in the last two months, and it happened while we were still in the middle of our vaccination,” he explained.
Dizon advised unvaccinated Filipinos to acquire their Covid-19 vaccines, warning that new strains of the virus will target people who haven’t had their shots.
Dizon also encouraged people who had already been vaccinated to receive their booster doses because of the plentiful supply of Covid-19 vaccinations.
After falling short of its goal of vaccinating 54 million Filipinos by the end of 2021, the NTF official predicted that the goal might be met in the first week of January.
He said that Typhoon Odette, which hit Visayas and Mindanao in mid-December 2021, hampered the government’s vaccine rollout.
“By the end of January, we want at least 70 million people to have received their first dose,” Dizon stated.
The NTF also plans to provide full Covid-19 vaccinations to 70 million Filipinos starting in March this year, according to Dizon.
The presidential adviser added that after the country receives vaccine orders from Pfizer, which have a different formulation than Covid-19 jabs for adults, the government will begin vaccination of youngsters aged 5 to 11 years.
“We’re following up with Pfizer on it.” “We’re also seeing that youngsters who are exposed to Covid-19 in densely populated regions become affected,” Dizon said.
While the government is bolstering its Prevent-Detect-Isolate-Treat-Reintegrate (PDTIR) policy, Dizon encouraged Filipinos to rigorously adhere to health standards including wearing face masks, cleaning, and avoiding crowded locations.
During the Christmas and New Year celebrations, he noted, the public has broken minimum health norms during parties and get-together activities.
Booster shots are required for PNP officers.
Gen. Dionardo Carlos, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), encouraged police officers on Monday to get their booster injections as soon as they are available.
“We continue to educate our PNP officers about the need of getting their booster shots. We will continue to use the same method that we used to persuade them to receive their Anti-Covid immunizations,” Carlos said in a statement.
He said the PNP understands the apprehension of a few officers who refuse to be vaccinated, but the rise in daily Covid-19 cases should serve as a reminder to everyone that “there is a pressing need to protect ourselves against the virus’s terrible effects.”
The PNP has fully vaccinated 215,801 personnel, with 8,775 receiving their first dosage and 1,534 remaining unvaccinated.
“Police officers are considered front-line responders in the government’s Covid response because their job requires them to interact directly with people while maintaining law and order in every town. We don’t want sick cops because it would hinder their performance,” Carlos explained.
The number of active Covid-19 cases in the PNP had risen to 57 as of Monday, following the discovery of eight new infections.
Three more recoveries were also recorded, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 42,110, while the death toll remains at 125.
