PRRD says the next president should be “compassionate and determined.”

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has stated his wish for a “compassionate and decisive” successor.

“First and foremost, the president should be compassionate, ‘yong para sa tao nga (He should be pro-people),” he stated in a prerecorded exclusive interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, which aired on SMNI on Saturday. “Second, you need to make a decision.”

Apart from the two traits mentioned, Duterte believes the next president should be a “mayor” and a lawyer like him.

He went on to say that his successor should be capable of dealing with a variety of challenges, including the Philippines’ South China Sea (SCS) tensions with China.

“You must be ready to deal with any and all problems,” Duterte stated. “Isang tingin mo lang maka-decide ka na kaagad, and the implications, alam mo na kung ano.”

Vice President Leni Robredo, Senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, former presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, former national security adviser Norberto Gonzales, labor leader Leody de Guzman, Lanao del Sur businessman Faisal Mangondato, and Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr. are among the 10 candidates running

Moreno is the current mayor of Manila City, while Robredo and Montemayor are both lawyers.

Duterte may back or endorse a presidential candidate whose name begins with the letter “O,” according to Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, who also serves as the acting presidential spokesperson.

Andanar later explained that his latest statement was based only on his intuition.

Duterte has yet to support a presidential contender, having previously backed Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, who later withdrew.

When asked if he expects the national and municipal elections on May 9, 2022, to be free and fair, Duterte replied, “I cannot guarantee you that it will be peaceful.”

He insisted, though, that no election-related violence would be tolerated.
